Protect The Pup
Dog parks can be hotbeds of contagion for things like heartworms, fleas and ticks, and dog flu. Although many park ordinances require that dogs be current on vaccines and parasite control, this is often nearly impossible to enforce. Keep Fido current on his preventative care. If your canine pal is a puppy, hold off on park trips until your vet gives you the all-clear.
Bring Water
Dogs can get hot and thirsty very quickly when they are running and playing. Although many parks have water fountains, this isn’t a universal thing. These features may also be out of order. Always bring water along for both yourself and Fido. (Tip: Consider getting a portable water bottle with an attached dispenser.)
Survey Potential Playmates
Before letting Fido off-leash to play with his buddies, take a look at the dogs that are already there. If you see any pooches that are acting aggressive or bullying other pups, play it safe, and go elsewhere.
Be Cautious With Treats
Parks can be great spots for training Fido, or just tossing a ball or Frisbee for him. Of course, your pet’s four-legged pals will quickly notice any ‘goodies’ you have. Be discreet, especially with food. Otherwise, you may find yourself at the center of a puppy ruckus!
Try New Places
There are some great parks in this area, such as Heritage Pet & Garden and Piper’s Glen Park. However, you may also find some pretty hidden gems you didn’t know about. Try using apps to find new spots.
Enjoy Yourself
Don’t think of taking Fido to the park as a chore. This will be just as good for you as it is for your canine companion. Spending time in beautiful scenery enjoying some fresh air and sunlight with your furry best friend is a pretty good way to spend an hour or two. Life is better with dogs!
